Lotus F1 Team had a curtailed day of testing at the Circuit de Catalunya near Barcelona today. Power steering issues in the morning and rain in the afternoon limited track time for Kimi Räikkönen to 43 laps.

“It was good to get in the E20 after missing testing last week. We had an issue with the power steering in the morning then we didn’t run in the wet, so it was quite a short time for me in the car today. At least we got some runs. The car was reliable when on track meaning we gained some good data for the team. Hopefully the weather will be better tomorrow and we can complete more laps.”

Kimi Räikkönen, Lotus F1 Team Race Driver:

“Aside from the time we lost early on it was clear that we were running a different programme from the other teams today. We were hampered by power steering issues in the morning, which took some time to rectify. Once on track, we steadily improved the car balance through the day. We opted not to run in the rain which meant we completed fewer laps today than would otherwise have been the case.”

Alan Permane, Trackside Operations Director:

Fast facts:

Track: Barcelona, Spain, 4.7km
Chassis: E20-01
Weather: Sunny, air 10-19°C, track 11-24°C
Programme: System checks, temperature monitoring, data correlation, set-up changes.
Laps Completed: 43
Classification: 10th, 1’25"379
Interruptions: Power steering investigation and steering rack change.
What’s next? Kimi Räikkönen will complete the final day of pre-season testing working on set-up work and a race simulation.

Romain Grosjean put Lotus on top as the second morning of in-season testing at Mugello came to a close.

In contrast to the torrential weather which blighted the opening day, conditions were dry almost from the outset, allowing teams the chance to catch up with their disrupted programmes.

Many therefore opted to run with periscope gauges or various aero sensors rather than chase times.

Such priorities would not diminish Grosjean's pace, however, as he pulled clear of the field after barely an hour in and never looked under threat thereafter. He ended the morning on a 1m21.603s.

Mark Webber, in the Red Bull for this morning before handing over to reigning champion Sebastian Vettel for the final day and a half, ended the morning as Grosjean's nearest challenger.

Kimi Raikkonen put Lotus at the head of the order on the final morning of Formula 1 pre-season testing at Barcelona on Sunday.

The Finn, who had worked through a programme of five-lap simulations on soft and medium rubber during the early hours, completed a number of single-lap runs in the final hour and set the pace in 1m22.030s - the best time achieved at Barcelona during pre-season running.

Raikkonen, who finished the morning with 41 laps to his name, was 0.220s faster than home hero Fernando Alonso, who completed 63.

"According to Sky Sports pitlane reporter Ted Kravitz, the engineers found differences between Raikkonen’s and Grosjean’s telemetry, indicating that something was indeed wrong with the steering. “The engineers checked the telemetry data and saw that there was indeed something not quite in keeping with Romain Grosjean’s steering data from the previous two days. So they checked the system over, bled the hydraulics, checked for air bubbles etc and then sent him out again,” said Kravitz.

However, Raikkonen was still wasn’t happy with the steering when the team sent him out again so the mechanics set to changing the steering rack for Raikkonen, fitting the one he used at the first test in Jerez. Raikkonen had already reported that he was not happy about the steering in Jerez last month and the team had already brought a new steering system to Barcelona. “Lotus mechanics are replacing the entire steering rack; that’s quite big job and time is ticking away, which is unfortunate as Lotus couldn’t wait to hear what Kimi had to say about their car around Barcelona, given Romain Grosjean’s time-topping performances over the first two days,” Kravitz reported. Raikkonen ended the morning session 10th, +3.526 seconds off the pace.

According to Finnish newspaper Turun Sanomat, Raikkonen prefers to have a light steering which allows him to correct the rear when it slides."

The Finn responded to the hype surrounding his return with four fast stints, and occupied the top spot on the timesheets from the minute he first left the garage.
His fastest time so far, a 1m19.670s, set on his third run using medium Pirelli tyres, was faster than any testing laps at the Spanish track throughout 2011.

Ferrari insisted they are "quite satisfied" with the development of their KERS system despite running into problems during testing in Bahrain.
Kimi Raikkonen found himself sidelined for almost three hours on Tuesday due to a problem with the cooling element of Ferrari's Kinetic Energy Recovery System.
The Scuderia, though, insist the system is progressing well, although there is still work to be done
"We're coming close to the end of this long test session here in Bahrain and the days are more and more intense," tech director Aldo Costa told Autosport following Wednesday's running.
"We have to exploit what the rules permit in terms of tests, as far as reliability, development and research in terms of performance are concerned.
"There might be some problems ahead, like the ones we've had over the two days with the completely new components of the KERS or with experiments, like the ones we had on the gearbox this morning.
"As far as the KERS is concerned I have to say that we're quite satisfied with what we've seen so far, although there's still lots of work to do.
"We used a standard configuration for the aerodynamics here in Bahrain, with just some minor updates: the complete one we'll see at the next tests in Jerez and Barcelona, where we will conclude our preparation for the Australian GP."

BARCELONA, Spain — Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen was fastest in Formula One testing with all 10 teams in action Tuesday and new F1 outfit Brawn GP recording the third quickest lap time.

Raikkonen's best lap time of one minute 20.314 seconds around the Catalunya Circuit was more than half a second faster than his closest rival, Kazuki Nakajima of Williams.

Rubens Barichello was behind the wheel for Brawn GP for the first time since Ross Brawn bought the team from Honda on Friday. The 37-year-old Brazilian had a fastest time of 1:20.966 from 111 laps, with Brawn GP adapting well to its Mercedes engine.

"If the management group, because it is not just myself, had not taken this task on, there would be no team," Brawn told autosport.com of the Honda buyout. "It wasn't a difficult choice in that respect. Things can go wrong, but we are optimistic and if we can capitalize on the performance of the car, and the car looks good, then I think the team have got a future.

"If the car was poor then we only have ourselves to blame."

Brawn confirmed that chief executive Nick Fry would stay on with the team, while Barichello said he hadn't spoken to Bruno Senna since being picked over the nephew of the late three-time champion Ayrton Senna to partner Jenson Button this season.

"It is sheer coincidence that we ended up after the same place at the same time," Barichello said. "He has a future in F1 for sure. I haven't seen anyone just yet with the capability of having run four years in cars, and all of a sudden getting to F1, and doing so well like he did in testing."

Toyota's Jarno Trulli and Mark Webber of Red Bull rounded out the top five, while McLaren continued to lag behind the pacesetters with Heikki Kovalainen finishing more than 1.6 seconds behind fellow Finnish driver Raikkonen.

Toro Rosso's second day in the 2009 car went badly after Sebastien Bourdais had a mechanical problem after 14 laps and partner Sebastien Bourdais managed only six laps.

The season begins at the Australian Grand Prix on March 29.

The fifth and final day of testing at Jerez was also affected by the weather, as it was cloudy, with occasional rain and strong gusts of wind.

In addition to Ferrari driver Kimi Raikkonen, five other teams continued to test for the final day.

The team worked on engine and gearbox reliability, evaluated tyres and development of some aerodynamic components, as well as carrying out some practice pit stops, including refuelling.

"Today, we were able to compare various set-ups aimed at the tyres," Raikkonen said after posting the second fastest time. "One of the novelties for this year, compared to last season is that I have a good feeling on the slick tyres.

"I think the teams all seem very closely matched and this makes me think that the coming season will be particularly close," he added.

Ferrari resumes its test programme next Monday at Circuit de Catalunya.

Far from the spotlights Kimi Raikkonen is perhaps an interesting person, but he closes himself like an hedgehog, when a microphone appears.

Q - "What is your best quality?"
A - "Don’t ask me. You have to ask someone else!"

They call him the Iceman of F1, but behind his light blue eyes could be a heart of ice or the secret of his coldness in driving. Raikkonen often protects his eyes wearing dark black glasses.

Q - "What was your best race last year?"
A - "I won once or twice ... I don’t even remember how many! However, it’s not important. I have to say you that last year in some of my best races I haven’t collected any results, so...
Once he was seen under a gorilla coat; in the Artic Rally which he has recently raced in Finland he used James Hunt’s name, the 70s cursed pilot who Kimi probably feels to have some affinity with.

Q - "Why did you choose the name James Hunt?"
A - "I don’t know, it’s a long story, it was born to joke with my friends. It would be complicated to tell you all briefly. It's just a game.”

Last year did not arrive to play the title at the last race, although in 2008 he was the driver who has earned most of all, about 30 million euro on his contract.

Q - "It was not however a good season ..."
A - "I've left behind, I hope to do better this year."

Q - "Was there a worst moment?"
A – “It’s very difficult to choose one, a single moment. The whole season was not sure how I hoped it to be. "

Q - Hamilton or Massa, is your strongest rival?"
A - "I don’t know who will be the fastest and it’s early to say which team will be stronger between Ferrari and McLaren. And maybe even there will be another team that will come out. We will see in the first race."

Since last race in Brazil he has lost a few kilos of his weight. Surprised, the Finnish newspapers headlined that he would have drank only water in public during the winter break.

Q - "Do you feel more focused than past years in winning the World Championship?"
A – “It’s always difficult to win the title, but it’s my only goal today."

D - "Have you got a wish?”
A – “Not at all. We only need to give it all to reach the result, and sometimes it succeeds."

That’s Kimi.

Yesterday morning the times were very high due to the track being damp from cleaning. For two hours the laptimes were in the 1:50's. Little by little they went down, with Raikkonen eventually setting the best time of the day: a 1:33.350.
After 15:00 there was a hydraulic problem that forced Raikkonen to be sidelined for 1,5 hours.

Translated Q&A with Raikkonen:

Q: How do you like the slick tyres ?
Raikkonen: ''They're quite good even though I had a spin in the morning, but it was the first time I tested on a dry track. We know where we are and it's a good starting point. The lost days ? I'm here to drive, there was nothing we could do to change the situation. Now I've made up for it a bit.''

Q: You've been driving with KERS...
Raikkonen: ''And it works well, sometimes it has problems (minor problem on Monday - AFCA) but today it was perfect, like it was in Mugello. It's a nice addition.''

Q: Which of the new regulations do you like most ?
Raikkonen: ''Certainly I like the slicks because they allow for a more exciting drive with respect to the grooved tyres, even though you slide about more when they're worn down. We hope we can improve the tyre (management) with the Grand Prix' in sight. In any case, for F1 it's the best choice.''

Q: Were the tyres worn down when you spun ?
Raikkonen: ''It wasn't down to the tyres: I ended up in a run-off area which was very slippery and dusty.''

Q: How do you prepare for the new season, does anything change ?
Raikkonen: ''I don't know. I hope to do well. I try to give my utmost in testing to be ready for the Grand Prix'.''

Q: Is it true that you've decided to only drink water and coca-cola in order to come back to the winning ways ?
Raikkonen: ''A Finnish paper wrote that. I don't think I have to talk about my private life.

Kimi Raikkonen topped the timesheet for Ferrari in Bahrain on Friday, as the sand storms that have caused havoc at this week’s test finally subsided and the three teams present were able to complete a full day’s running.

A combination of high winds and the desert location of Sakhir had sent clouds of sand swirling around the 3.4-mile track earlier in the week, limiting the teams’ running to just 90 minutes on Wednesday and forcing Thursday’s session to be cancelled altogether.

Although there was some early morning fog on Friday and the wind remained strong, testing went ahead without interruptions and track conditions progressively improved.

Raikkonen set the day’s best time of 1m33.350s in what was his first run in the Ferrari F60 in dry conditions, having previously tested it in the rain at Mugello.

The Finn completed 105 laps, his only minor setback being a hydraulic problem that struck shortly after 3pm and was swiftly fixed by the Ferrari mechanics.

FERRARI'S Kimi Raikkonen and Felipe Massa will be sharing testing duties in Bahrain next week.

This was confirmed to the GDN last night by Ferrari public relations manager Luca Colajanni.

The Formula One world champions will be testing at the Bahrain International Circuit (BIC) alongside BMW and Toyota. They will be on the track in two four-day sessions - first between February 10 and 13, and then between the 16th and 19th.

"Raikkonen and Massa will be committed to drive four days each. Only one car per day, as per testing agreement," Colajanni told the GDN.

The team will be working on general development and reliability of their F60 car, as the world championship opener in Melbourne draws closer.

"We are on schedule with regards to our [development] programme," added Colajanni.

Ferrari were the first F1 team to unveil their 2009 car this pre-season. The F60 features a lower, wider front wing and a taller, narrower rear wing, in line with revisions to F1 regulations. Its name commemorates what will be the team's 60th campaign in F1.

Raikkonen and Massa will be joined by fellow Grand Prix drivers Robert Kubica and Nick Heidfeld of BMW, and Jarno Trulli and Timo Glock of Toyota, in testing. BMW reserve driver Christian Klien is also set to get track time.

The three F1 teams are reportedly spending more than £300,000 (BD164,000) each in coming to Bahrain compared to what they would have been required to spend testing in Europe, according to an official.

"We've never gone to Bahrain testing because the delta between staying in Europe and going out there is well over £300,000, so it's not really conducive to saving costs," Williams technical director Sam Michael told the autosport.com website.

"Most of the time, the weather is not bad through February and March. January is normally the worst month, so we just get on with it as we are. It doesn't affect normal development rate, it just affects your normal set-up progression."

Ferrari, however, like BMW and Toyota, expect Bahrain's warmer temperatures and drier conditions will benefit them in their preparations. Their most recent tests in Mugello, Italy, held last month were occasionally disrupted by rain.

"Weather was the crucial factor which addressed our decision [to come to Bahrain]," Colajanni said.

Kimi Raikkonen has no complaints with Ferrari's KERS despite the Italian outfit stating they are behind schedule with the device.

This year's championship sees the introduction of the Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS) into Formula One. However, some teams are not too happy with the idea.

While Ferrari and Williams have both already revealed they may not use it at the start of the season, Renault have slammed the use of the device as a 'terrible mistake.'

Raikkonen, though, says he no complaints with KERS after testing it for the first time at Mugello earlier this week.

"Both days the use of KERS had positive results," the Finn told the Gazzetta dello Sport. "The system works well like every other new component."

But despite being satisfied with Ferrari's progress, Raikkonen does not believe KERS will have as big an impact as the powers-that-be had hoped.

"You have more power but for such a short time that I think it won't change things much," he added. "Maybe it's an interesting invention, but I don't think it's decisive."

ROME - FORMER world champion Kimi Raikkonen complained that rain had hampered his testing of the new F60 Ferrari on Tuesday but said he was still satisfied with his run out.

It was the second day running at the famous Mugello track just outside Florence that Raikkonen had to battle the elements as well as all the new changes to the car implemented at the behest of the International Automobile Federation (FIA).

He did at least manage to improve on the previous day though, setting a best time of 1min 33.92sec over his 42 laps compared with 1:34.43 the previous day when he completed 54 circuits.

'It's always nice to drive a new car for the first time,' said the 2007 world champion.

'Unfortunately because of the weather we were not able to push to the limit, but these things happen'.

'All the same, first impressions are positive and, above all, it's important that we didn't have any particular technical problems.'

One of the main uncertainties ahead of the new season is the new Kers system, designed to recuperate kinetic energy.

'Already on the first day the Kers gave positive outcomes,' added the Finn.

Raikkonen's Brazilian team-mate Felipe Massa will take over the testing reins on Wednesday and Thursday hoping for better weather.

Jerez de la Frontera, 10th December - A sunny second day of testing for Kimi Raikkonen. But the Finnish driver had to wait for half of the morning, so he could run on slicks, as the track remained wet for a long time in the morning. Furthermore the session had to be interrupted, because Alonso's Renault spun off the track.

"We haven't done many kilometres over these two days, because the conditions weren't really good," Kimi said when he met the press during the lunch break. "We're mainly trying to understand how the slicks work and we're testing some solutions the car will use in the upcoming season. It's useless to speculate about what will be in the future. Too many things are different on the cars on the track. To get a precise idea we have to wait until we all have the new cars."

As far as Honda's withdrawal and the actual situation in Formula One are concerned, Kimi didn't want to say too much:
"Obviously I was really surprised by Honda's decision last week, but I don't want to comment what's happening at the moment."

Kimi Raikkonen isn’t giving up his bid for a second consecutive Formula One title, even though he is only fourth with four races remaining and Ferrari team-mate Felipe Massa could use his help to catch Lewis Hamilton.

“It definitely won’t be easy, but I’m going to try to win the championship and I’ll still help the team,” Raikkonen said after testing at the Mugello track Thursday, running 79 laps with a best time of 1:21.079.

McLaren’s Hamilton leads with 78 points, Massa is second with 77,Robert Kubica of BMW Sauber is third with 64 and Raikkonen has 57. The next race is the Singapore Grand Prix on Sept 28.

“It’s been a while now that I haven’t been able to perform how I like to and right now the only thing I’m focused on is getting good results, then at the end I’ll look to see where I am in the standings,”
said Raikkonen, who finished ninth in the Italian GP last weekend.

Singapore will be making its debut on the Formula One circuit with a night race.

“I don’t think there will be any type of danger because there will be so many lights you probably won’t be able to notice the difference from a traditional Grand Prix,” Raikkonen said, according to the ANSA news agency.

Raikkonen only knows the Singapore track from a FIAT simulator.
“It’s like a video game,” he said. “It was great to see the curves, but the truth is you need to actually drive it to really understand how it is,” he added.
