Confident Kimi eyes first-lap charge

Kimi Raikkonen says he will be looking to take full advantage of Ferrari’s Kinetic Energy Recovery System to make up places off the grid in this afternoon’s European Grand Prix.

The Finn will start from sixth place after a strong qualifying performance, and should be able to use the extra 80bhp KERS boost to move up the order on the first lap.

Given the difficulty of overtaking on the Valencia street circuit, which is dusty off-line, Raikkonen reckons it will be even more important than usual to make a good getaway.

“Our final result will depend basically on how the start goes,” he said.

“It will be very important to make up a few places, because if we end up behind a slower car, then the race is compromised.”

Raikkonen has been pleased with his car’s handling this weekend and believes he is in with a shout of a podium finish.
