Hamburg - Former Ferrari boss Jean Todt said the decision by the team to hire Kimi Raikkonen as driver last season instead of then world champion Fernando Alonso was proven right. Todt told the German magazine auto, motor und sport released Thursday the Finnish driver's character fitted Ferrari better than Alonso.
The Spaniard was also considered as a successor to retiring record champion Michael Schumacher but joined McLaren from Renault.
"Kim has been among the best drivers for the past five, six years. That's why I could never understand people who were disappointed by his performances in the first half of the season," Todt said.
"Is Kimi better or worse than Alonso? I can't answer that. For me both are excellent drivers. The car makes the difference.
"But I am sure, or at least as sure as you can be on something like this, that Kimi is happy at Ferrari."
Raikkonen just edged McLaren-Mercedes drivers Lewis Hamilton and two-time champion Alonso to win the 2007 drivers' championship in the season's final race in Brazil.
Todt quit as Ferrari's sports director after the season ended. Alonso also left McLaren and will this year drive for Renault when the season begins in March.
